Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood. Cerebral means having to do with the brain. Palsy means weakness or problems with using the muscles.
Micro-Neurosurgery
Surgery was performed using an operating microscope. Micro neurosurgery is a term used to refer to the operating microscope and specific micro-instruments which are deployed to perform surgery for treating the diseases of the brain, spine, and spinal cord.
Deep Brain Stimulation
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that uses implanted electrodes and electrical stimulation to treat movement disorders associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor, dystonia and other neurological conditions.
Brain Tumor Surgery
To remove a brain tumor, a neurosurgeon makes an opening in the skull. This operation is called a craniotomy. Whenever possible, the surgeon attempts to remove the entire tumor. If the tumor cannot be completely removed without damaging vital brain tissue, your doctor may remove as much of the tumor as possible.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive keyhole and endoscopic surgery are now possible for most brain and skull base tumors. Keyhole surgery is the concept of safely removing brain & skull base tumors through smaller, more precise openings that minimize collateral damage to the surrounding scalp, brain, blood vessels, and nerves.
Laminectomy
Laminectomy is surgery that creates space by removing the lamina — the back part of a vertebra that covers your spinal canal. Also known as decompression surgery, laminectomy enlarges your spinal canal to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.
Canalith Repositioning (CR)
The canalith repositioning procedure can treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which causes dizziness when you move your head. The procedure includes head maneuvers that move the canalith particles (otoconia) in your inner ear that cause the dizziness to a part of your ear where they won't.
Microvascular Decompression Surgery
Microvascular Decompression is a surgical procedure to relieve the symptoms (pain, muscle twitching) caused by compression of a nerve by an artery or vein. It provides the longest duration of relief from trigeminal neuralgia pain, and the lowest rate of permanent numbness of the face after surgery.
Spine and Cerebral Tumor Embolization
Cerebral tumor embolization is a procedure in which a catheter is placed into the patient's groin and carefully navigated into the blood vessels supplying the tumor under X-ray guidance. Tumor embolization is a procedure that can be performed prior to a planned surgical resection. Embolization shuts down the blood supply to a tumor reducing blood loss during surgical resection.
Traumatic Brain injury
Mild traumatic brain injuries usually require no treatment other than rest and over-the-counter pain relievers to treat a headache. However, a person with a mild traumatic brain injury usually needs to be monitored closely at home for any persistent, worsening, or new symptoms.
Nerve & Muscle Disorders
Neuromuscular disorders affect the nerves that control voluntary muscles and the nerves that communicate sensory information back to the brain. Nerve cells (neurons) send and receive electrical messages to and from the body to help control voluntary muscles. When the neurons become unhealthy or die, communication between the nervous system and muscles breaks down. As a result, muscles weaken and waste away (atrophy).
Vertigo
Vertigo is a symptom, rather than a condition itself. It's the sensation that you, or the environment around you, is moving or spinning. This feeling may be barely noticeable, or it may be so severe that you find it difficult to keep your balance and do everyday tasks.
Spine Deformities
Spinal deformity is an abnormal alignment or curve of the bony vertebral column. Adult scoliosis and kyphosis can be caused by age-related wear and tear on the back or complications from past surgeries. The moderate deformity occurs when the facet joints and discs deteriorate over time and are no longer able to support the spine's normal posture. Pain results from stressed joints and pinched nerves, not the abnormal curve
Migraine Care
A headache of varying intensity, often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine headaches are sometimes preceded by warning symptoms. Triggers include hormonal changes, certain food and drink, stress, and exercise. Migraine headaches can cause throbbing in one particular area that can vary in intensity. Nausea and sensitivity to light and sound are also common symptoms.
Peripheral Nerve Surgery
The peripheral nervous system consists of all the nerves that are outside of the brain and the spinal cord: the nerves in your arms and legs, in your face, and in your chest and abdomen. Whether caused by injury, surgery, or conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, damage to the peripheral nerves can lead to chronic pain that is difficult to diagnose and find solutions to treat.
Skull Base Surgery
Skull base surgery is surgery that is done to remove a tumor or other growth at the base, or bottom, of the skull. Minimally invasive skull base surgery also called endoscopic skull base surgery, is a surgical technique that lets doctors do this delicate surgery through the nose.
Pediatric Neurosurgery
Pediatric neurosurgery includes diagnosis, treatment, and management of children's nervous system problems and head and spinal deformities including the following: Head deformities. Spine deformities. Problems and injuries of the brain, spine, or nerves.
Epilepsy
A disorder in which nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures. Epilepsy may occur as a result of a genetic disorder or an acquired brain injury, such as a trauma or stroke. During a seizure, a person experiences abnormal behaviour, symptoms and sensations, sometimes including loss of consciousness.
Cerebrovascular Surgery
Cerebrovascular surgery refers to specialized surgery on the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain. Geisinger's neurologists, neurosurgeons and radiologists work as a team to diagnose and treat brain aneurysm, stroke and other problems with the brain's blood vessels.
CSF Rhinorrhoea Repair Surgery
Endoscopic repair is considered the treatment of choice in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea. The aim of our study was to analyze the etiopathogenesis of CSF rhinorrhea, the outcome of treatment and the causes of failure in a developing-country setting.
Gamma-Knife Radiosurgery
Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a type of radiation therapy used to treat tumors, vascular malformations and other abnormalities in the brain. Gamma Knife radiosurgery, like other forms of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), is not surgery in the traditional sense because there is no incision.
